One year there was a sting operation at four San Francisco high schools by the police department. Superintendent Rojas had suspected that the mayor had set up this operation to make him and the district look bad, as the two of them had disagreed on a number of issues. One issue had to do with the superintendent allowing a drug felon to do community service hours in the school district. I will refer to him as John Thomas. There was a newspaper and television story that questioned the school district’s role in the matter. The superintendent says that it is gives John an opportunity to be a contributing member of society. I personally worked with him, and supervised his community service hours. John Thomas is determined, spirited, and conscientious about the work in the community, from projects with recycled computers and technology to the neighborhood organizing of public housing residents, and working with jail and prison reform. He is diligent in his work. I meet his wife and children and I am impressed with their support for each other.

Periodically, I meet with his probation officer who had attended another high school in San Francisco. John also attended high school in San Francisco but had dropped out of school. After the community service hours had been completed, I met a police officer whose sister is a teacher in the San Francisco schools, and is a friend of the family. He is a commander in the police department and tells me how extensive John Thomas and his operation had been with the sale of drugs in the Mission District. He says that the Thomas family was doing a multi-million dollar operation and how they had operated out of the neighborhood. I asked him what he thought happened to the money. He did not know but he tells me that a house may have been bought for a family member, but the main priority is to have enough money available to hire an attorney.

This seemed to be what may have happened in the Thomas case as I had met his attorney on several occasions. He had a nice office in a fashionable area of the city. He seemed competent and capable in representing his client’s interests. In the end it had been an interesting time working with this case. All 1,000 hours of community service hours were accounted for, and we all moved on. I did see John Thomas at his child’s elementary school promotion exercise. He and his wife are proud and supportive of her schooling. They celebrate as she leaves elementary school for middle school.

During the sting operation, two twenty-three-year-old female policewomen posed as students, and mingled with them at the high schools for over ten weeks. In the end sixteen high school students were arrested for selling drugs. It was thought that the drug problem in the schools was far worse than what was exposed which had surprised the police department. Six of those arrested were from Metropolitan High School. In the end, the police department said it was delighted at the job most of the schools were doing.
